WE are out in nature walking our dog or let our dog out onto the back deck for some fresh air. Your furry friend is loving the smells and adventure of being outside the house.
Sadly, little dogs are often looked at as prey to larger birds or wild animals. They cannot safeguard themselves like larger dogs.
Small dogs should not be left outside by themselves. Since they are prey to wild animals and some birds, if they see an opportunity, your furry friend might be gone by the time you get back.
For this lady, Deborah Falcione, she let her pups outside onto the deck for some fresh air. The blind and deaf poodle, Porschia, was grabbed by a hawk.
When she realized what had happened, she panicked and burst into tears. She started to lose hope that she would ever see her beloved dog again. In spite of feeling hopeless and helpless, she reached out to friends to help with the search.
The feeling was sick in the pit of her stomach as it got dark and cold outside, and they still hadn’t found Porschia.
Porschia is Found:
Over a day later, Falcione received a call from the Banfield Animal Hospital. They had her dog in their care. They had here in a heating blanket, and thankfully there were no signs of broken bones.
Falcione could hardly believe it. Her 6 lb, 16-year-old, blind, deaf poodle had survived 28 hours of being out in the bitter cold night. The dog was against all the odds. But she had a strong will to live in spite of it all. Falcione calls it a truly a miracle.
Hawks and Little Dogs:
Hawks are not picky about where they find their prey. Sometimes we as dog owners forget that we don’t need to be out in nature for our little dogs to be the catch of the day for some wild animal or a hawk.
We need to be mindful at all times where we leave our little dogs by themselves, even if just for a brief time. Rest assured, Falcione will be watching her small dogs closely from now on.
Hawk Mountain noted that they feel like it may have been a different wild animal that took Porschia because of some of the facts, but they cannot say for sure. They indicate that the great horned owl, eagles, the red-tailed hawk typically carry a maximum of 4 lbs, but usually only about 1 to 1 ½ lbs. Either way, it is not worth taking a chance with these birds of prey.
It is always best to air on the side of caution to protect our beloved furry little friend. They cannot defend themselves in the case of an incident.
This scenario turned out with a rejoiceful ending, but many of them do not. We are happy you were found Porschia.
