This cute beagle, Gregory, shows obvious gratitude to his new owner, a man who saved him from being euthanized. The look on Gregory’s face says it all. The picture of this beautiful dog showing his affection as they drive away from the dog shelter has gone viral.
When people talk about the bond between an owner and their dog, most people say that they felt that connection as soon as they meet. The same was true in this story. This two year old furry friend appears to have felt an immediate connection with his new owner, Joe Kirk. It is almost as if the beagle knew his demise if Kirk hadn’t saved him.
Joe and his wife manage the Hound Rescue and Sanctuary. One day Joe sees a schedule of the dogs that are going to be put down if they don’t get rescued. And Gregory’s profile was on that list.
There was no way Joe was going to let that happen. He immediately drove a few hours to get to the dog shelter that had posted Gregory’s call for help. When he arrived at the Franklin County Dog Shelter, Joe knew he had done the right thing.
There were two days left before Gregory was scheduled for euthanization. Maybe he sensede it and then Gregory sensed freedom when Joe saved him. The dog had been in a cage for so long that Joe felt like letting him ride in the backseat of the car might be a better idea.
This was when Kirk knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that these two were meant to be together. Gregory snuggled into Joe right aways, as if they were old pals. The whole two-hour car ride back to his new home, Gregory showed his gratitude and affection to Joe.
What do most people do when riding along with a beautiful furry friend? – Of course – selfies. Joe then sent them along to his wife so she could see this affectionate, grateful dog. When she posted them on Facebook, it was easy for everyone to see the connection and how grateful this beagle was to be free and have a new chance at life.
No one knows where Gregory came from. The shelter had found this beagle astray about a month before this. He seemed healthy. Gregory had energy and a solid frame, and so on.
But it remained a mystery where he came from. It was common for beagles to be used as a hunting dog in that part of Ohio. Sadly sometimes they were pretty much ignored unless it was hunting season. So they could lack exercise and consistent care.
It turned out that Gregory tested positive for heartworm after being further examined. Sadly, many shelters and other places that don’t have regular treatments, the cases of dogs with heartworm is higher. This type of infection is a parasitic roundworm and is transmitted via mosquito bite as the carrier. Vets recommend regular medicine to prevent heartworm because it is hard to detect.
When the Kirks chose to take on Gregory, they knew they just had to get him back to health. Gregory deserved to have the best chance at life.
Once Gregory gets a clean bill of health from the vet, there are already people interested in adopting the beautiful dog. In the meantime, the Kirks have been taking care of Gregory’s heartworm problem and teaching him to sit and stay.
Gregory is such a good dog and now has an opportunity to have a life, to love, and be loved. Thank you to people like the Kirks and Gregory’s adopted new family for giving him a chance.
