Several years ago, during the war on ISIS in Iraq, a fellow by the name of Ken Wyrsch was stationed there to assist a military unit. Wyrsch was there volunteering, and he would aid in whatever way he could to the military troop.
If you have never been overseas during a war, you can only imagine how unnerving this might have been. Always on guard and under stress.
This time, however, they had support from a furry friend named Ollie. Ollie was a dog that appears to have come into these soldier’s lives for a reason. Fate perhaps. Ollie was always there for them and offered a way to de-stress. He became their best friend.
Ollie was just a stray puppy whom Ken spotted one day when the dog was walking around in search of food. The soldiers realized that he didn’t have a home, so they gave him a home at their base. Ollie became the reliable, constant loving presence in their military lives.
When Wyrsch found out a month later that their unit was going to be returning home, he was concerned about what would happen to Ollie. This dog had become such an integral part of each and every one of those soldier’s lives. How could they just walk away from Ollie?
Wyrsch decided that he just had to find a way to take Ollie with him when he came back home. He could not bear to leave a friend behind. As Ken was making his way back to California, he still thought about his buddy and began to figure out a way to get Ollie home with him, where he belonged.
As soon as he got home, Ken contacted the SPCA to see what could be done. He described the whole story to them, and they started to make a plan for how Ollie could be rescued out of Iraq and over to the US. There were apparent obstacles in the way, but once they got the ball rolling, things started coming together. The SPCA shared Wyrsch’s story online, and the response was grandeur. They got lots of support, both with best wishes, but also with money donations towards this cause.
Before the month was up, the furry friend was traveling on his way to his new home with Wyrsch. With much determination and a big caring heart, it was finally going to happen. His best friend was going to arrive at the airport.
Olie’s excitement when he arrived at the airport and sees Wyrsch, says it all. These two definitely have a bond that both of them don’t want to be without. Ollie’s new life began. Wyrsch was happy to get on with life outside of the war and show his buddy what life was all about in California. There was hardly a time that these two were not together.
Of course, Ollie settled in great and won the hearts of people all around him. He was happy and with his best buddy. That feeling was mutual. Wyrsch had the constant love from the dog in the tough times of the war, and Ollie had the constant love and care and attention when he was alone on the streets of Iraq. These two reuniting was meant to be!
