A dog named Tyson was recently adopted by a gym owner. Before being adopted by his current father, he belonged to a family with three other dogs. Because of Tyson’s huge appetite and very high energy, his family gave him up for adoption. Tyson wanted food and a dog treat more often than most dogs.
His new owner has another dog named Allie. Allie has a big appetite as well, but he only wants whatever food Tyson has. Tyson is very strategic when it comes to finding food.
Allie, on the other hand, does not want to do all the work. When Tyson gets the food, Allie will simply steal it from him. This has frustrated Tyson multiple times.
His father also wants Tyson to take his mind off of food, so both dogs were brought to a dog care center to socialize. As expected, Tyson looked for food instead of looking for friends.
When Tyson finally found some treats, Allie took it from him. And the battering continues.
The father finally asked for help from an animal expert. As a test, the expert put food under the treadmill. He observed both dogs on how they were going to get the food under the machine. The expert has observed that Tyson observes his environment and will find ways to get what he wants. Allie, on the other hand only wants what is readily available.
The expert did another test. He placed some treats in a sealed box because he wanted Tyson to stop trying too hard. He wants him to learn that there are things that he can’t get. It took a while. Tyson does not give up that easily, but eventually, he did.
When he gave up, his father gave him some treats as a reward. When it was Allie’s turn, he quickly gave up just a few minutes from trying. He also got a treat from his father.
The expert placed a machine that will gives out treats. Treats come out of the dog treat machine during specific periods of time. In this way, Tyson will not be obsessed with looking for food.
The machine allows him to know when the next meal will come. As for Allie, he has learned that when he does not steal Tyson’s food, he gets a reward. Both dogs have made tremendous progress.
